Metta Meditation
union yoga studio | february 2020 | 4’ x 8’ | interior acrylic paint
This was a two part mural project done in collaboration with Sarah Waterfield for Union Yoga in order to bring life and art to their stairwell. Together we planned out the mural ideas, sketches, and eventually colour palette that would complement the studio’s branding. Sarah painted the floral illustrations on both pieces while I did the hand lettering.
Metta meditation, also known as loving-kindness meditation, is a type of Buddhist meditation. “In Pali — a language that's closely related to Sanskrit and spoken in northern India — “metta” means positive energy and kindness toward others.” Read more about metta meditation here. The phrases from this kind of meditation was the perfect message for this yoga studio’s members and visitors. The only difference between the two murals’ messaging is the “May You Be” vs “May All Beings Be”. This was done on purpose because of the placement of the two opposite walls in the stairwell. When you are entering the studio, Union is wishing you well and so the “you” is the focus, on yourself and your practice. Whereas the phrase for “all beings” is seen on the wall when you are leaving; a gentle reminder to be kind when you step out into the world and interact with others.
